Born in a lower middle-class Muslim family in Pune, Anisa, youngest of five siblings, moved to Mewat after marriage, a backward region on the Haryana-Rajasthan border. But her conservative origins couldn’t restrain Anisa Sayyed Khan from making the country proud time and again.

The 33-year-old shooter clinched silver in 25m pistol event at Glasgow on Saturday. She lost the gold medal match to fellow Indian Rahi Sarnobat (2-8). It is the third Commonwealth Games medal for Anisa, who won two gold medals in the 2010 CWG.

“I had apprehensions after marriage that I may not be allowed to continue with my sport. But I am thankful to my husband Mubarak Hussain, who is a great support,” Anisa had told HT before leaving for Glasgow.

“Shooting is an expensive sport. Due to technical reasons, the Indian Railways didn’t release my salary throughout the year in 2009-10, so I was totally dependent on my husband. If at that time, my husband would not have encouraged me to carry on with the sport, then the things would have been different,” she recalled.

STILL JOBLESS

Anisa resigned from the Indian Railways in 2010, alleging that they were creating hurdles in relieving her from the official duty to practice her sport. Then, despite being jobless, she turned down Haryana government’s offer to appoint her in the police, as she wanted to join the sports department. The medal might bring her a job of her choice now.
