Padma Shri awardee and legendary athlete Milkha Singh will flag off the third ‘Run for the Girl Child’ marathon being organised by the Indian Institute of Management, Rohtak (IIM-R) on 10th November.
An Indian Institute of Management-Rohtak (IIMR) press release quoted Milkha Singh: “It is important for us to support and encourage the girl child. Female athletes of our country have done us proud internationally and many of them are from Haryana. Public perception and attitude about female children must change as women play an important role in creating equitability in society and nation building”.
“I urge all concerned citizens to take part in the mini-marathon being organized by the IIM-Rohtak next month”, he added.
On the concept of the IIM-R’s marathon, an official said: “India’s low rank in terms of the GII (gender inequality index) and a gender ratio of 947 females per 1,000 males speaks volumes about the precarious environment for the women”.
The first marathon witnessed a turnout of more than 2,500 participants and the second edition, held in November last year, included a 3km race exclusively for schoolchildren. In 2011, the Indian Institute of Management-Rohtak founded a project to provide free education to the daughters of auto drivers in the district.
