Social justice and empowerment minister Col Dhani Ram Shandil on Thursday urged the Centre to include the state under the multi-sectoral development programme for the welfare of minorities.

During his meeting with union minority affairs minister Najma Heptulla at New Delhi on Thursday, Shandil informed her that the state had not been included under this programme and as a result, minorities, who formed 4.5% of the state population, were unable to avail the benefits of this programme.

Shandil also urged that the Centre open two residential schools in the state for the children of minority communities so as to enable them to receive higher education.

The minister said the state had already identified land for the school at Holi in Chamba district and Satrol in Solan district.

He also requested Heptulla to strengthen the State Minorities Community Financial and Development Corporation so that loans on minimum rates of interest could be provided to youth belonging to the minority community for self-employment avocations.

He also urged for enhancing the financial assistance to the children of minority communities under vocational training. The union minister assured that the state would be included under the multi-sectoral development programme and that the ministry would consider other demands.
