Minor girl's rape: man gets 10 years in jail

Rupnagar additional sessions judge Ajaib Singh on Saturday sentenced a man to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment (RI) in a minor girl's rape case.

According to the prosecution, Gurjit Singh alias Surjit Singh of Paprali village falling under Singh-Bhagwantpur police station of Rupnagar district, had induced a minor girl of Kurali on the pretext of marrying her. Kurali Police had registered a case under Section 363 and 366-A of the IPC against Singh then.

Later when the girl was recovered, Section 376 (rape), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC were also added in the case after conducting her medical examination. Names of four other accused, including Gurjit's mother Bhupinder Kaur, Ulwinder Singh, Jasbir Kaur (both of Sir Kapra village of Fatehgarh Sahib district) and one Rajni of Kurali, were also added in the case by the police.

After completion of the trial, Gurjit Singh was sentenced to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 20,000 was also imposed on him. In default of payment of fine Gurjit would have to further undergo two years' rigorous imprisonment.

The judge also sentenced Gurjit to five years' rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him under Section 366-A of the IPC and six months' imprisonment under Section 342 and one year's imprisonment under Section 506 of the IPC.

The judge also ordered that all sentences shall run concurrently. All other accused in the case were, however, acquitted.
