The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) provided a compensation of Rs 3 lakh to a 13-year-old rape survivor under the state government’s victim compensation scheme on Tuesday. The check was handed over to her by district & sessions judge RK Sondhi. The funds, which will be deposited in her bank account, can only be withdrawn by her when she attains majority.
The accused, Saajan, took the girl from Pinjore’s Rajjipur village on April 22, 2013. The same day an FIR was filed at the Pinjore police station. After the cops conducted a search both the girl and Saajan were traced in a Bihar village, close to the Nepalese border. After the girl was brought to Panchkula, a medical examination was conducted on her on July 30, 2013, which confirmed rape, and the police charged Saajan with rape and kidnapping under the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
Medical tests conducted on the girl in August 2013 confirmed she was pregnant. The District Legal Services Authority, on behalf of the victim, moved an application for abortion, which was allowed.
