An unidentified motorcycle-borne person made an unsuccessful attempt of robbing a doctor couple after throwing chilli powder in their eyes here on Saturday.

The couple is working at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. The incident took place in the residential area of Sector 24 around 7.30 pm.

Talking to HT, general surgeon Dr Anil Kumar Bhardwaj said he along with his wife Dr Neerja Bhardwaj, a professor with the anaesthesia department, were on an evening walk when an unidentified person on a motorcycle came from behind and threw chilli powder on them.

"I wear spectacles so I did not realised that the person had thrown anything on us. It was after my wife raised the alarm, I came to know that the person on motorcycle had thrown something on us," Dr Bhardwaj said. The accused fled the spot.

The couple failed to note down the registration number of the motorcycle. They informed the cops by calling the police control room (PCR).

Dr Bhardwaj said the police van reached the spot, but the cops did not explain them how to lodge a complaint and left the spot after inspecting it.

Dr Bhardwaj also expressed his concern about poor lighting in the area.

The incident has raised a question mark on the security arrangements in Sector 24, which is considered to be a VIP area.

The Sector-24 police post in charge said they had not received any complaint from the couple.
