Unidentified miscreants tried to rob an ATM of Punjab National Bank at Bahadurke Road on late Wednesday night. The ATM cabin is adjoining the Punjab National Bank, Bahadurke Road branch.
The miscreants made a hole in the wall of the ATM cabin to enter it and tried to break open the ATM machine, but failed. The ATM was closed in absence of a security guard.
The bank employees came to know about the incident on Thursday morning when they came to the bank, following which they alerted the Salem Tabri police. The police initiated investigation and registered a case against unidentified accused in this context.
Nachhattar Lal, a bank official, said the staff had left the bank on Wednesday evening, after locking the ATM cabin as well as the bank.
He said the miscreants entered the ATM cabin by making a hole in the wall and damaged the gate of the ATM cabin. In their attempt to open the ATM machine, the miscreants damaged it, but were unable to steal any cash.
Salem Tabri SHO inspector Kewal Krishan said the police had obtained the bank's CCTV recording and were trying to identify the miscreants.
It is pertinent to mention that former police commissioner Nirmal Singh Dhillon had asked banks to close their ATMs that did not have security guards at night.
Earlier, on April 6, miscreants had managed to enter Co-operative Bank, Ayali Kalan, and tried to break open the strong room, but failed.
