The six-year-old student of a model school returned home safe two hours after being reported missing.

Locals said someone had informed the police control room on phone that a girl had gone missing from a school on Patel Road. Deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Surinder Pal and other senior police officials rushed to the school and a massive man hunt was launched.

They said the girl, a resident of Subzi Mandi here, had gone to her friend's house after taking a monthly test in the school.
Sources said confusion was created when the girl's younger brother had informed his uncle that someone had taken away his sister in a car. His uncle had then informed the police control room as the parents of the children had gone to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh to see an ailing patient.

Sources said the school principal Vijay Rani had told the police that nothing wrong had been noticed in CCTV cameras at the school gates.

Dharam Pal, police post number 1 in charge, said all police stations were alerted and barricades were put up at all exit points of the town.
