The body of a 22-year-old man who had been reported missing since August 11 was fished out from the Bhakra canal in Grewal village near here on Monday. The deceased was identified as Deepak Sikri, a resident of Nangal who worked in an IT company in SAS Nagar. The body reportedly bore several injury marks.

Following a complaint lodged earlier by Deepak’s family, the police had filed a case under section 363 (kidnapping) of the IPC in SAS Nagar. However, the family members had accused the SAS Nagar police of not making any efforts to trace Deepak.

Following the body’s discovery, the family alleged that Deepak had been murdered after being beaten up. They raised slogans against the police and demanded that the IT firm’s owner, Vijay Kumar, his wife and an accountant working in the firm, Saurav, be charged with murder, claiming the three were responsible for Deepak’s death.

Later, Rupnagar SP Darshan Singh Mann, after talking to SAS Nagar SSP Inder Mohan Singh, informed Deepak’s family that a case of murder under section 302 of the IPC had been filed against Kumar, his wife and Saurav. Besides, Phase 1 police station SHO Ravinder Pal Singh was transferred while an ASI, Jaspal Singh, was suspended for dereliction of duty in the case.
