Punjab industries minister and senior BJP leader Madan Mohan Mittal on Saturday opposed the move of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) to burden power consumers of the state through power purchase of `700 crore.
Talking to mediapersons here, Mittal said burdening all the sections, including domestic, industrial and agriculture consumers, would not be in the interest of the state.
He alleged that every year the PSPCL increased the power tariff by misleading the people and put the burden of transmission losses and power theft on the consumers to hide their own lapses. He also demanded probe into transmission losses being shown by the PSPCL.
Mittal said industries would be badly hit if the PSPCL was allowed to burden power consumers. The move would also have an adverse effect on the investments proposed by the industrialists and investors during the Progressive Punjab Summit held few months back.
He said there was a lot of resentment among people of the state over the hefty power tariffs. He said the SAD-BJP alliance had to face a lot of criticism from people over power tariffs during the Lok Sabha elections and any further increase in it would harm the prospects of the alliance in the coming elections to civic bodies in the state.
Stating that the BJP would not tolerate any power tariff hike, he urged Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to intervene into the matter and stop the PSPCL from further burdening the consumers.
