A man who had withdrawn Rs 4 lakh for his daughter’s wedding slated for April 27 lost the money to two motorcycleborne robbers in Pinjore on Monday.
The incident took place around 10:39am on Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) company’s premises, where the victim, Mangat Ram Sharma (52), works.
The victim withdrew Rs 4 lakh from a Punjab and National Bank (PNB) branch at around 10:20am and packed the cash — eight wads of Rs 500 notes — in a carry bag. The victim then bought some medicines and placed the bag on the petrol tank of the motorcycle. The snatchers came from opposite direction on a motorcycle and fled after snatching the bag.
An eyewitness, Vikram Kumar, who works at a medical store, chased the accused on a bike till the gate of HMT and saw them fleeing towards Pinjore. The accused were on a Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle. The accused driving the bike was wearing a helmet, while the pillion rider was without a helmet.
There was no security guard deployed at the bank.
A case has been registered under sections 356 (Assault or criminal force in attempt to commit theft), 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Pinjore police station.
Cops scanning CCTV
Deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Hamid Akhtar visited the spot and scanned the footage of CCTV cameras installed at the bank and a nearby medical store. Akhtar said that there were four people who were keeping a watch on the victim.
The accused were dark in complexion and apparently in their thirties, he said. “One of the accused was inside the bank, while other three waited outside. He said that suspects are most probably migrants. Two bikes were used,” the DCP said.
