A mock drill to review the security arrangements at the Burail Model Jail left the residents staying in the vicinity panicked on Saturday.

The security arrangements and preparedness of the jail officials to tackle any untoward incident was checked on Friday night.

The alarm siren at the jail left everyone startled. The alarm was sounded to inform the police personnel deputed on security duty that a jail inmate had escaped from the jail premises.

The police officials were also informed about the escape of a jail inmate to check the action time by the former.

Rahul Gupta, superintendent, Model Jail Burail, said a large number of convicts are lodged in the jail and hence the security needs to be really tight. The officials reviewed all the arrangements besides conducting a security mock drill and analysing the response time, said the jail official.

Maneesh Chaudhary, IG, Burail Model Jail, said these drills would be carried out in future as well. The anti-riot equipment and pepper spray had also been procured at the jail.

Some officials could not reach on time for the mock drill. A report is being prepared to fix responsibility and to check which of the officers were late. The information was sent to the Chandigarh police control room around 10.45 pm. The jail officials who would be found lacking in the duty as per the report will be asked to explain for this.

Sources in the police claim that a senior jail official did not respond to the calls during the mock drill. A policeman from the south division reached the spot late. More than a dozen PCR vehicles were pressed into service and policemen from different wings were alerted.
