Union commerce minister Anand Sharma on Saturday attacked BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, by saying that he was a liar and an arrogant person, and that the Gujarat model of development was a “bundle of lies”.

In Chandigarh to campaign for Congress candidate and incumbent parliamentarian Pawan Kumar Bansal, Sharma claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was spreading false propaganda. “Modi hamesha 56-inch chaurey siney ki baat karte hai, unke chehre par humility, honesty nahi dikhti. Unke chehre par kadwahat, intolerance aur arrogance dikhti hai (Modi talks about his 56-inch chest, one cannot notice any humility and honesty on his face, but can notice bitterness, intolerance and arrogance),” he said.

Sharma said the reality was that Gujarat’s school dropout rate and public debts were one of the worst in the country.

Later, at a rally in Sector 19, he said the BJP was speaking against corruption, but had taken back Karnataka’s former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, though he had been named in a corruption case.

He went on say that the Congress had introduced several bills for eradicating corruption and bringing in transparency. “The aim of introducing these bills was never to save a Congress person,” he said.

Bringing up BJP leader Amit Shah’s reported statement in which he had asked Jats to avenge the Muzzafarnagar riots, Sharma said there were communal overtones in Modi's decision to contest from Varanasi and in the BJP’s “Har Har Modi” slogan.
