The senior Punjab Congress leadership, which met here on Monday evening to finalise the party nominee for the February 23 Moga byelection, has decided to recommend a panel of three candidates to Congress president Sonia Gandhi for her final approval.

The meeting was presided over by Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh at Sector-10 residence here. Amarinder had arrived after attending the three-day chintan shivar of the party at Jaipur.

During the one-hour-long meeting, the names of several potential candidates were discussed, including Punjab Mahila Congress president Malti Thapar, Jagroop Singh Takhatpur and Harjot Kamal. However, Vijay Kumar Sathi and Darshan Singh Brar continued to be the favourites among senior Congress leaders of the state.

The six-member committee constituted by the PPCC president and headed by Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjit Singh has already submitted its report to Amarinder.

The committee is learnt to have made a few recommendations, which also came up for discussion.

Among those who attended the meeting were Congress Legislature Party leader Sunil Jakhar, Rana Gurjit, Arvind Khanna, Rana KP Singh, Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Om Prakash Soni, Ajaib Singh Bhatti and Chiranji Lal Garg.

Jakhar said the party had left it to the Congress president to take the final decision.
