President of the SAS Nagar Auto Drivers’ Union, Kuldeep Singh, was shot dead late on Saturday evening by another auto driver, after an argument over ferrying of passengers.

Police and witnesses said the incident at Phase 11, SAS Nagar, took place at around 10 pm. The accused, Sawinder Singh, a resident of Phase 10, has been arrested.

SAS Nagar SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said Kuldeep, 40, had raised objections as Sawinder was not registered with the auto union but would still ferry passengers. He said an argument broke out as Sawinder allegedly jumped queue and started to take on board passengers out of turn.

An altercation soon turned worse, following which Sawinder pulled out his licensed .32 bore pistol and shot at Kuldeep, he added.

Kuldeep was hit in his head and died on the spot. He was rushed to the civil hospital, SAS Nagar, but doctors declared him brought dead.

Sawinder Singh, the son of a retired army officer, owns four autos. A few auto drivers told HT that there had been arguments between the two in the past as well. They said Kuldeep had asked the accused to get his autos registered with the union. Police also rounded up a few auto drivers present at the spot for questioning.
