A group of youths assaulted a female student in front of Government College, Phase 6, after she objected to some comments passed by them on Saturday afternoon. The police registered a case, but arrests were still to be made, though the group's car - owned by a man named Gurvinder Singh - was found from a village nearby and seized.
As per the complaint, the victim, a resident of Kharar, said she was on her way back home on Saturday afternoon on her scooter when five youths in a Maruti Swift passed lewd remarks at her, to which she objected.
This angered the youths, who got down from the car and first slapped the victim, then rained blows. As she started shouting for help, they fled.
She said she did not recognise the youths, and police investigations revealed that they were not students of the college.
It is pertinent to mention that the SAS Nagar police had deputed woman commandos outside the college, but they were not present when the incident took place.
"We have registered a case against unidentified youths and Gurvinder Singh, whose car the boys were in. The car was recovered from Malana village in SAS Nagar. We will arrest the youths soon," said deputy superintendent of police RS Sohal.
