The flying squad-1 of Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested a head constable, posted in the Economic Offences (EO) wing, at SAS Nagar for accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a Kharar resident on Tuesday night.

The accused, identified as Harminder Singh, was produced in court on Thursday, and sent to judicial custody.

Superintendent of police (vigilance) Hargobind Singh said a bank employee, Gaganjot Singh, had complained that the constable had asked for Rs 50,000 from him to settle a financial dispute in his favour. The bribe amount was finally settled at Rs 25,000 and the first installment of Rs 10,000 was to be given on Tuesday.

A trap was laid and Harminder was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 10,000 from Gaganjot near Franco Hotel, Phase 1.

Why was bribe sought

In his complaint to the vigilance department, Gaganjot Singh said Amritpal Singh lodged a complaint against him, which was referred to the EO wing. Accused Harminder Singh started demanding money from Gaganjot from the first day of the case, being the investigating officer. A case under Sections 7 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been lodged.
