For stabbing a man and his daughter more than a dozen times after they refused to toe his line on buying a property, additional district and sessions judge, KK Kareer, on Friday awarded five-year jail to a resident of Phase-5 in Mohali, convicted of attemped to murder. The convict, Pankaj Partap Singh (34), has also been fined Rs 25,000. He sought to kill Suresh Kumar and his daughter Shweta, residents of Sector 50, Chandigarh, in April 2013.
The statements of the injured victim, who even identified the accused apart from the recovery of the weapon (khukhri) from accused Pankaj, a property agent, helped prove the guilt of accused. The court held, “Pankaj is found guilty of offence under Section 307 (attempt to murder) IPC. No mitigating circumstances exist for leniency.”
On April 9, 2013, the UT police registered a case on complaint of Shweta Moudgil, who alleged that she and her father Suresh Kumar residents of Sector 50, Chandigarh, were stabbed multiple times. Deepika Lama, the neighbor, a teacher, had also bumped into the accused in the parking area in the neighbourhood. The accused Suresh Kumar Sharma was injured and had blood oozing out. Police claimed that Suresh wanted to buy another property after selling Sector-50 house and had contacted Pankaj. When Pankaj showed Suresh a property he refused to buy, the dealer planned the crime. Pankaj said, “Suresh approached me to purchase a property. I had spent between Rs 40,000 and Rs 50,000 on advertising sale of his flat. He refused to pay up and framed me instead.”
