The SAS Nagar police will now update the applicants of police verification for passports through SMSes. An applicant can also lodge his or her complaint, if any, through an SMS. The step has come as a big relief as this will put an end to the complaints of bribe being sought by cops doing the verification.
Also, under the scheme, the police will talk to the applicant and then fix the time of the visit for the verification.
SAS Nagar SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said, “We have formed a special team for the smooth functioning of the SMS service. We want to make the process transparent and leave no room for corruption.”
Giving details, Bhullar said as soon as the police would receive an application for verification, the officer concerned will have to intimate the applicant through an SMS. “The police will need to complete the verification process in next three days and keep the applicant updated through SMS on the status. Also the cop visiting the applicant’s house for verification will have to first call him/her up and fix time for the meeting,” Bhullar said.
The project was supposed to be implemented across Punjab, but only a couple of districts have adopted the same till now.
The fee for the verification process has been fixed at `100. Under the SMS scheme, the applicant will be informed through the SMS the amount he/she was supposed to pay for the verification. Once the verification is done, the applicant will get the SMS to know police clearance/non-clearance and the date on which the report was sent to the Regional Passport Office.
