In the past two years, the SAS Nagar police have registered a total of 22 FIRs which have section 66A of the IT Act.
On February 7, an FIR was registered against 10 individuals for sending threatening messages to a girl. Here, the IPC section 506 that deals with criminal intimidation was added too.
The ‘victim’ here is a friend of Amandeep Kaur, a woman who was shot dead by her former lover on January 12. While the alleged killer in under arrest, 10 of his friends have been booked for sending threatening message, where they have threatened to kill her as well like her friend.
The latest available case was on February 27, when an FIR registered against Sunny, a resident of Phase 3B2, for sending allegedly abusive audio about some spiritual leader to one Rajinder Singh, resident of the same area.
In 2013, there were eight cases, 12 last year, and two till February 28 this year.
“We are examining the cases, and will see how to proceed case by case since the section 66A goes out now,”said senior superintendent of police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar.
