A 24-year-old woman who strangulated her ye a r- old daughter to death would spend rest of her life behind bars. After the district and sessions judge SK Aggarwal awarded her life term for murder on Tuesday, Mamta broke down, as her claims of being falsely implicated in the case failed to impress the court.
“Motherhood is the one of the most precious gifts endowed on the mankind and there is no relationship more pristine and pure than that of the mother and her child. In this case, mother has killed her own child. The hands in which the little kid was to get the best of love and affection proved fatal for her,” observed the court.
Though gruesome, the court did not find the murder to be treated among the “rarest of rare” cases, war ranting the capital punishment.
Mamta, hailing from Yamunanagar in Haryana , was residing at Faida village in Chandigarh in a rented accommodation when she was arrested in May 2013 on the allegations of murdering her daughter, Sonakshi.
The court convicted Mamta on the basis of extra-judicial confession before Mewa Singh, her landlord and complainant in the case, wherein she had admitted to have killed the child after being threatened by her ex-boyfriend of making the disclosure that he was father of the child.
A case was re gistered on the complaint of Mewa Singh, who was the owner of the house where Mamta lived with her husband Sonu and their daughter. The prosecution had claimed that Mamta had an affair with Vicky, a resident of Haryana, prior to her marriage and Sonakshi was his daughter.
