Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener and star campaigner Arvind Kejriwal’s road show zipped across the city on Sunday, but the show was marked by overeager motorists violating all traffic rules.
Kejriwal covered 15 points in five hours, beginning 10 am, an hour later than schedule, with the southern sectors, including colonies, the main focus.
The local party unit had obtained permission for ten vehicles for the show, but the actual number seemed higher.
The Chandigarh police preferred to be a mute spectator to the violations, which included helmetless-driving, triple-riding, supporters jutting out of the cars, overspeeding, overloading and incessant honking and banging cars against each other in an effort reach closer to the vehicle carrying Kejriwal.
The event star ted from Hallomajra, where youngsters were seen holding placards, “We will live and die with you and will give every drop of blood for you.” Kejriwal addressed the residents here with songs of patriotism being played in the background and repeated his allegations that the Haryana and the Gujarat chief ministers Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Narendra Modi, respectively, were working for industrialist Mukesh Ambani.
Kejriwal, in a white shirt with blue strips, kept waving to the crowd with echoes of Bharat Mata Ki Jai and Inqalab Zindabad in the background. Party candidate Gul Panag and her father Lt Gen (retd) HS Panag were present in Kejriwal’s jeep.
Later, the cavalcade moved to Burail and Kejriwal resisted the cops’ attempt to ensure that some distance was maintained between residents and him. “The police are requested to stay away. Do not come between me and the public,” he said.
He addressed residents at Burail, Butrela and later at Kajheri.
All through the day, people were seen standing at balconies and rooftops to get a glimpse of the leader.
From Ram Darbar, the caravan headed towards Sector 31 and took a halt at Sector 47. The vehicles’ speeds again was dangerous.
The road leading to Sector-38 West was jammed for 15 minutes, when the show proceeded towards Dadumajra and Dhanas. Kejriwal was not allowed to move into Dhanas due to security reasons before heading for Sectors 15 and 16. A crowd had also gathered to welcome Kejriwal in Sector-20.
In Sectors 41, 44, Dadumajra, Deep Complex, Burail and Manimajra’s Shivalik Gardens the response to him seemed a lot better than the other sectors. His day in the city concluded at the Manimajra market area.
