Move by Badals to swap chairs: Bir Devinder

Former Punjab deputy speaker Bir Devinder Singh has said that the “Panthic conclave” that the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has called in Amritsar on July 27 is “a one-act play” coming up to help chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and party president Sukhbir Badal switch places.

“It is evident from the political developments over the past few weeks that Badal is all set to assume the role of ‘morcha’ dictator as new president of the SAD and his son, Sukhbir, to take over as chief minister in his place,” Bir Devinder stated here on Thursday.

He urged the Akal Takht jathedar to withdraw his edict of excommunicating three leaders of Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee and prevent a “monumental blunder”. “The Sikh clergies became party to the parochial politics of the Badal family when in their exalted position as jathedars of the five Takhts (temporal seats), they were expected to rather interpolate in the matter,” said Bir Devinder.

He said the scheduled Akali conclave was “ill-conceived” and threatening to make the situation more volatile. “The confrontational approach that the SAD leadership has adopted on the issue is the manifestation of the crooked vision and politics of vested interests of the Badals. The SAD, under the captive leadership of this family, has committed an unpardonable sin by laying siege to the gurdwaras in Haryana and preventing devout Sikhs from praying,” Bir Devinder added.
