A 16-member team of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) arrived at the Panjab University (PU) on Sunday and randomly visited various girls and boys hostels in Sector 14 and Sector 25 campuses of the University.
There are a total of 18 hostels on the campus, eight for boys and nine for girls, and one working women's hostel, accommodating more than 7,000 students. The NAAC peer team is led by former vice-chancellor of Pondicherry University and senior scientist Prof Anil Bhatnagar. The team is here to evaluate and accredit the university with a fresh NAAC rating. The peer team consists of many reputed academicians, scientists, former vice chancellors and serving vice chancellors from different parts of the country.
Over last few months, PU authorities have been working for the visit of NAAC team. It is an autonomous body set up by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country.
Accreditation is a voluntary system of evaluation of higher education institutions and programs based on self-evaluation and peer-assessment for improvement of academic quality and public accountability.
PU accreditation had expired in January 2013. The varsity has constituted a committee for preparing for NAAC teams visit. NAAC will give weight to aspects such as curriculum, teaching, evaluation, research, infrastructure and innovative practices.
NAAC team had last visited campus in 2009 and had showered praises on the varsity.
