The row over a recent tiff between Congress MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra and Fatehgarh Sahib SDM Pooja Syal Grewal has set off a war of words between the Congress and the SAD-BJP leaders.
After some Congress leaders, including Amritsar MP Captain Amarinder Singh and leader of Opposition Sunil Jakhar, condemned the alleged violation of protocol by the SDM, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MP Prem Singh Chandumajra has urged the state home minister and the director general of police (DGP) to initiate legal action against Nagra for allegedly using abusive language against the SDM, besides obstructing a government employee from doing official duty.
Anandpur Sahib MP Chandumajra, in a statement issued here on Wednesday evening, also asked Congress leaders, including Amarinder Singh and Jakhar, to refrain from supporting Nagra “without knowing the facts of the case”.
He said, “The lady officer was just implementing the court directions with regard to the illegal encroachments in the Sirhind Grain Market area”.
Chandumajra said that it was a matter of serious concern that senior leaders like Amarinder and Jakhar were supporting the Congress MLA instead of initiating disciplinary action against him.
He claimed that Nagra was the same MLA who had misbehaved with the staff of the Punjab assembly in the past and the Congress had to apologise for his conduct.
BJP district president Manoj Gupta also criticised the Congress MLA for using “unparliamentary language” against the SDM. BJP leader Shashi Bhushan Gupta said that instead of threatening the officials, issues could be resolved by holding a peaceful dialogue.
On the other hand, Congress MLAs Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Charanjit Singh Channi have urged the Punjab assembly Speaker to order an enquiry into the incident and refer the matter to the committee on privileges of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.
Expressing their concern over the “unbecoming behaviour” of the Fatehgarh Sahib SDM towards Nagra, they also alleged that the officer had overstepped her perview by going to the press against the MLA. They alleged that she had breached the privilege of an elected representative of the people and that too in the presence of the public, besides breaching the protocol.
Fatehgarh Sahib deputy commissioner Arun Sekhri said that he had initiated a probe into the matter and the administration would thoroughly go into all the aspects of the incident before preparing a report.
