Nature’s see-saw: Day’s heat wave is high-speed duststorm in evening

Strong winds laden with dust hit the tricity on Friday evening engulfing the entire area for over an hour.

The cloudy weather, which was predicted and had been brewing up since after noon, morphed into a dust storm by evening and strong winds carrying dust hit from the northern side. Dust was seen all over houses, trees, roads and vehicles. The storm was also followed by light rains. But were recorded in scattered parts that too minimal.

Officials with the meterological department said that tricity recorded winds with a speed of 60-65 kmph laden with dust at around 6 pm.


There were no major reports of loss to property and life in the tricity but a false ceiling fell on the top floor in Advanced Trauma Centre of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education And Research and there was also report of winds taking away the cantilever of a building in Hallo Majra area. At both places no injury has been reported.

Fire officials said that there was no report of any damage to life and property in the city.
“The dust stor m will bring down the temperature over the weekend and there is also possibility of light rains in next 48 hours,” director, Met, Surender Paul told Hindustan Times.

The maximum temperature in Chandigarh was recorded at 41 degree Celsius, a shade lower than compared to Thursday.

The Met department said that the dust storm would result in f all in temperature over the weekend, giving much respite to the residents from the heat wave.
