An actor who was once touted as ‘the No 1 hero’ of Bollywood — thanks to Hero No 1, Jodi No 1, Coolie No 1 — in person now, Govinda comes as a surprise; not a pleasant one. His smooth dance moves have now turned into a still saintly figure, whose sentences end with the words parmatpa, numerology, vastu shastra and astrology. For instance, “I believe in everything — numerology, astrology, yoga etc,” he says in the middle of a conversation.

In Chandigarh on Thursday to announce his upcoming Punjabi film, Appan Vehle, Govinda tries his best to be ‘politically correct’.

Ask the Bollywood actor about his Pollywood debut, and he deflects the question brilliantly by saying, “I think all the major heroes of Hindi film industry are Punjabis. Punjab has provided real heroes to Bollywood.”

Taking the conversation forward, we ask him about his role in the upcoming film. “I rarely discuss my roles. I have come here just to gather good wishes for the film.”

So, we get down to talking about his favourite topic, apparently, to which he says, “The coming year is going to be very lucky, as Ganesh Chaturthi took place on the ninth of the ninth month of the year. This is a rare combination and is going to be very lucky. The year won’t have any vastu dosh or shabh dosh.”

You take a chance and ask him about quitting his political career, to which, he says, “Politics isn’t a subject to be interested in. The decision of not continuing with it was deliberate; it was an entirely different school of thought than mine. Before I ended up doing anything wrong, I thought taking a step back was the sensible thing to do. I’m also not a big intellectual when it comes to politics.”

Then he tells us his secret behind looking young. “Initially, the credit behind my energy went to my mother. Now, when I have lost weight and still remain young, the credit goes to my wife for taking proper care of me.”

Before signing off, Govinda discloses that the much-awaited Bollywood debut of his daughter, Narmada, would take place by next year. “I’ll start shooting for my next film, Abhinay Chakra, under my home production. Currently, I’m shooting for a Yash Raj production, Kill Dil.”
