The new academic session of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) will start on Wednesday.
Prof P Balaram, former director, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, will inaugurate the session on Wednesday. He will speak on 'Science and medicine: Bridging the gulf in India'.
Medals will be distributed among students for their outstanding research and academic excellence. The pin-up ceremony for the new entrants to the PGIMER will also be held during the function.
The new academic session at the PGIMER begins on January 7 every year. Around 150 students will join the MD/MS courses of various medical and surgical specialties and around 50 students will join various super-speciality courses this year.
Prof Balaram's main area of research has been the investigation of the structure, conformation, and biological activity of designed and natural peptides.
He has extensively used techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and circular dichroism along with X-ray crystallography. He has authored more than 400 research papers, and is a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy.
