The newly elected councillors of the SAS Nagar municipal corporation will be sworn in at the civic body’s first meeting on April 27.The oath to all 49 councillors will be administered by Rupnagar divisional commissioner.
After the matter of reserving post of mayor for a woman candidate went to the Punjab and Haryana high court (HC), the government had sought a legal opinion on whether the newly-elected councillors could be administered oath without holding elections for mayor, senior mayor and the deputy mayor.
The legal opinion allowed the oath ceremony of councillors, and it will now be held at MC Bhawan in Sector 68 on April 27.
Meanwhile, after the HC quashed the Punjab state government’s move of reserving the post of mayor for a woman candidate, the government hasn’t planned its next move on challenging the decision yet.
The sources claim that the decision was still being examined. Once the government was clear on its stance, the mayor elections will be notified and would have to be held within 72 hours.
HORSE TRADING ON
A day after the high court’s decision, horse trading has again started among different parties. The 12 independents which hold the key to the mayor’s post are being approached by leaders from both SAD-BJP alliance party and as well the Congress.
Sources claim that there is a possibility that Azad group led by real estate baron Kulwant Singh will bury the hatchet and join hands with the SADBJP alliance.
Having 23 councillors in its fold already, the alliance needs the majority of 26 councillors to elect the mayor. The Azad group has the allegiance of 11 independents.
