Municipal corporation (MC) of Chandigarh challaned nine violators for misusing water on the first day of its drive here on Tuesday.

The civic body began the drive to check wastage of potable water supplied to city residents during the morning hours (5.30am to 9am) from April 15 to June 30.

MC formed 16 teams comprising three members each to challan those misusing potable water with a fine of 2,000.

Superintending engineer, Public Health Department, MC, RC Diwan, said, “This year, we will issue notices to residents for wastage or misuse of water due to overflow from overhead or underground water tanks, leaks in pipeline from ferrule to water meters, and leaks and overflow from desert coolers. We will give them time to repair the same, but if they continue to leak, a fine of 2,000 will be imposed.”
