The Northern India Power Engineers Federation (NIPEF) has slammed the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) for opening the flood gates of Bhakra and Pong dams.

In a statement issued on Monday, NIPEF chairman RS Dahiya said the opening of the gates had resulted in spillage of 1.7 lakh cusec days at Pong and 0.6 lakh cusec days at Bhakra up to August 16.

He said the quantum of spillage was equivalent to the quantity of water flowing in a canal of 10,000 cusecs for 23 days and represented a loss of irrigation potential as the water flowed across the international border in to Indus.

"In energy terms the total loss up to August 16 was 222 million units (MUs) comprising 84 MU at Pong, 69 MU at Mukerian, 51 MU at Bhakra and 18 MU at Anandpur Sahib projects," Dahiya said.

He further said all BBMB power houses were at present operating in flat mode because of the prevailing spillage condition, which was causing losses.

"The rate of such 'dump energy' is about `2 per unit. A spillage loss of 222 MU represents a financial loss of `44 crore," Dahiya added.
