It seems there is no end to overcharging by parking contractors in the city. In a reality check conducted by HT in Sectors 34 and 35 on Saturday, the parking contractor in Sector 34, Zone-2, was found overcharging.

He charged Rs 10 instead of Rs 5. When asked, the attendant said they give Rs 5 back on the return, but when we returned, they did not return the money.

Though the MC is acting as a mute spectator, but BJP MP Kirron Kher said, “It is a serious issue and how can they overcharge as it is a case of extortion. I will talk to MC commissioner on the issue.” Even after repeated attempts, MC commissioner Vivek Pratap Singh could not be contacted. However, parking contractor at Sector 34, Zone-2, Gurpinder Singh said, “I have already instructed them not to overcharge, but if they have done, I will sack them as I will not tolerate any nonsense.”

E-ticketing machines not being used

During the HT team’s visit to various parking lots in Sector 34 and 35, none of the contractors were using e-ticketing machines and attendants were not wearing uniforms at most of the places.

The MC even conducted checks at parking lots of Sector 8 and 9 and found several violations. Area inspector Sanjay Rana said, “There were other violations, but they were not overcharging. We will impose fine on them.”

As per the contract, the civic body can terminate the licence deed of the parking contractor before the expiry date on a month’s notice or pay money equal to the licence fee for a month, but the civic body has limited the penalty to fines.

Moreover, acting on the HT report, the MC on Saturday imposed a fine on Sahib Singh and Jagat Anand parking contractor, who was found overcharging in Sector 17.

Sector 17 Inspector KC Katoch said, “We will be imposing a fine on both the contractors for overcharging and other violations. We will calculate the fine amount on Monday. The fine will range from Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000 for all the violations.”
