Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Naina alias Jannat Jahan is not one of the affluent candidates with assets just worth ` 22 lakh in her name, as per the affidavit submitted by her while filing her nomination here on Tuesday. However, her spouse, Hafiz Anwar-ul-Haq, who contested the Lok Sabha elections last time from Chandigarh, has income close to ` 1crore. While Jannat owns neither a house nor a car, her husband owns agriculture land in Uttar Pradesh and an Audi car.
The election fever on Tuesday gained momentum with Congress candidate-cum-member of Parliament Pawan Kumar Bansal and Jannat submitting their nomination papers at deputy commissioner’s office at Sector 17. Jannat entered Sector 17 with a boisterous campaign in an apparent attempt to display her strength and popularity base. It appeared to be a mini fair in the crowded Sector 17 with BSP supporters roaming with flags. She brought along a sea of supporters who ensured that party flags could be seen in the entire Sector 17.
The din of dhols mingled with the slogans, as Jannat filed her papers. Jannat waiving to the crowd came in a gypsy around 1:30pm, with a caravan of around six cars and supporters, who had walked along from Sector 34. The procession led to traffic jam on the city roads in Sectors 17, 22 and 34.
