Students are up in arms over hike in mess diet charges by Rs 4 for all those who are not hostellers. The diet will now be available at Rs 35 for such students.
Leaders of National Students Union of India (NSUI) Chandan Rana, Manoj Lubana, Snigdha Bawa and Gurjot Sandhu submitted a memorandum to dean students' welfare Prof Navdeep Goyal on Friday stating that the hike in various hostel charges was acceptable.
Goyal said, "Earlier, the price of meals was the same for hostellers and outsiders. The hostellers also pay mess development fund and other charges; so, same rate for both categories of students is not justified."
He said under no circumstances mess contractors would be allowed to charge the higher rates from hostellers.
Panjab University Campus Students' Council president Jasmeen Kang said, "Even if they are charging it from those who are not hostellers it will burden those living in paying guest accommodations. Half of the varsity students are living in Sector 15 as paying guests for lack of accommodation in hostels. They usually have food in hostels. We will take up the issue with the DSW."
