With the constituency seeing its highest ever turnout during the Lok Sabha polls, very few people opted for the ‘None of the Above’ (Nota) option.
About 13 lakh people voted during the LS polls — interestingly, the same number of people had registered to vote in the 2009 polls — but only 2,658 Nota votes were registered.
“I first thought I would vote for Nota but decided against it. Instead, I chose to vote for a party who could bring in a strong and stable government at the Centre,” said Shreya Khatri, a resident of Sector 22.
Political experts reckon that this is the first time Nota has been introduced in Haryana, therefore fewer people might have opted for it.
The district administration conducted numerous drives, both in rural and urban areas, educating people about the voting option and its implications.
“We introduced a local Haryanvi poll mascot, ‘Voting Tau,’ to help educate people on Nota. This way people knew they had an alternate option if they did not want to vote for candidates,” said Shekhar Vidyarthi, deputy commissioner.
Meanwhile, in the entire state a total of 34,219 people voted for Nota. Faridabad, Ambala, Sirsa and Rohtak saw the most number of people voting for this option.
Ambala topped the state with 7,816 Nota votes, followed by Rohtak and Sirsa respectively.
