The state election commission on Tuesday issued notification for elections to 123 municipal councils and notified area committees (NACs) and a ward in NAC of Bariwala in Muktsar district. The polling will take place on February 25, for which the filing of nominations began on Tuesday.
Announcing this, state election commissioner (SEC) Shivinder Singh Brar said the filing of nominations began on Tuesday with the issuance of notification for the elections. He said the model code of conduct also came into force from Tuesday, which meant no new development project could be announced or undertaken in the civic bodies going to the polls.
The code of conduct will be applicable to all areas that fall within the jurisdiction of these 123 municipal councils and NACs and the NAC where a bypoll is to be held and will end on February 27.
The nominations will be received from 11am to 3pm and the last date for filing nominations is February 13. These will be scrutinised on February 14 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is February 16. The polling will be conducted on February 25 and the counting of votes will be taken up soon after.
Brar said the 123 municipal councils, NACs and one ward of NAC Bariwala in Muktsar comprise about 28.5 lakh voters and 2,062 wards will vote in about 3,500 polling booths.
The electronic voting machines (EVMs) are under inspection for being declared election-worthy.
The process for polling in six municipal corporations in Moga, Hoshiarpur, Phagwara, SAS Nagar, Bathinda and Pathankot has already started. These will go to polls on February 22. The last date for filing nominations for the municipal corporations is February 11.
