new academic session Panjab University

Come new academic session Panjab University (PU) would be increasing fee for all its courses across the board, including self-finance courses, by around 10%.

The authorities are of the view that the cash-strapped university cannot excel in the areas of development till the time monetary inflow is proper.

The board of finance (BOF) at the university has come up with the recommendation of increasing course fees by which they say a lot of things will be taken care of.

Informing, PU vice-chancellor (V-C) Arun Grover said, “The move of increasing the fee has been mooted by the people from the finance board and we shall be taking up this further as a lot of development things depend upon monetary flow.”

Sharing another important development, Grover said the university was contemplating to have a graduate school.

He shared that the University Grants Commission (UGC) has come up with a competition wherein universities are invited to share their innovative ideas to improve higher education set up. Out of all universities that apply, 10 will be selected by the panel of UGC and will be given a grant of Rs 300 crore to implement the same.

The V-C said the university had also sent its proposal of having graduate schools on its campus.
Sharing more on the idea, the V-C said under the graduate school system, different departments for say under arts would be clubbed together and first year would be with common curriculum and then the student could pick up specialisation of their choice.

He added that, “It's a competitive world and to deal with competition from central and deemed universities, such innovative steps like graduate schools are very much needed.”

Another major decision being taken by the university is about forming 'think tanks' for different departments. The university officials have formed one such committee for the dental college and also it would be professional departments where such committee's would be formed on priority basis. The purpose of these committees will be to think ideas to make the functioning of departments better. They shall act as recommendatory bodies.
