National president of National Students Union of India (NSUI) Roji M John lashed out at the Punjab government for its failure to check the increasing drug menace in Punjab.

It has adversely affected the youth, said John, adding that even the close family members of Punjab CM were under scanner due to allegations of hand-in-glove with the flourishing drug mafia in the state.

John was leading an anti-drugs ‘Pad yatra’ (foot march) that was taken out by NSUI members in Chandigarh pn Wednesday. Shouting the slogans ‘Say no to drugs’ ‘Say yes to life’, hundreds of members of NSUI, led by Chandigarh state president Gurjot Sandhu participated in the rally that started from Chandigarh Congress Bhawan in Sector 35 and culminated at ISBT-17 roundabout.
Former union minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee president Pardeep Chhabra, youth leader Munish Bansal, NSUI national general secretary Davinder Yadav, Chandigarh mayor Poonam Sharma and Congress Women Cell president, Meenakshi Choudhary also participated in the march.

The rally was a start of campaign and a series of such events are scheduled to be organised by NSUI in Punjab.

“The campaign is aimed at exposing corrupt politicians involved or providing shelter to the drug peddlers and also to create awareness among youth,” said John.

Speaking on the occasion, Bansal said the drug menace in Punjab had reached at an alarming state and there was an emergent need to check it.

Lambasting the SAD-BJP government, Chhabra said during the past eight years, the drug mafia had thrived in Punjab and majority of the youths have became drug addicts.

Sandhu said, “Ddrug addiction in Punjab has rendered youths incapable of meeting the physical standards for recruitment in army and other forces. So, the NSUI has taken this initiative to make Punjab drug-free.”

John also inaugurated the NSUI office in Chandigarh Congress Bhawan.
