The National Students Union of India (NSUI) workers staged a protest outside the administrative block on Saturday morning just before the syndicate meeting was to start.
The students were demanding the student council's representation in the senate, the apex governing body of the university, which, they claimed, had representatives of others bodies like university teachers' and non-teachers' union.
Panjab University Student Council president Chandan Rana said this had been a long-pending demand of the student community. "On the lines of Panjab University Teachers' Association (PUTA) and Panjab University Staff Association (PUSA), the PUCSC president must be an ex-officio member of the senate as he represents more than 15,000 students on the campus,"he said.
The protesters claimed that the vice-chancellor had earlier assured the matter would be taken on priority, but the V-C office had not done anything in this regard.
The protesting students also raised slogans and demanded to meet the vice-chancellor on the issue. The VC had to make a rear gate entry to make it to meeting. Later, dean, college development council, Naval Kishore accompanied by some other syndics assured the students that their demands would be taken up. Protesting students threatened to intensify the stir if their demands would not be met. They also announced to launch a signature campaign.
