‘Obedience, will to guard family honour got my daughter killed’

chandigarh Updated: Jan 14, 2015 11:40 IST

“Obedience and her intention to guard her family honour cost my daughter her life,” said a devastated Kulbir Singh, father of Amandeep Kaur, 21, who was shot dead by her alleged paramour, Gurmeet Singh, near her paying guest accommodation in Phase 5, SAS Nagar, on Monday.

The helpless father told HT that had he not given up to pleading by his daughter to let her go to Chandigarh, Amandeep would have been alive today. He categorically denied that his daughter had any relations with Gurmeet, also a resident of Ferozepur, and demanded that the latter be punished the same way he killed Amandeep.

Kulbir was at the civil hospital in Phase 6 on Tuesday where he came from Ferozepur to get his daughter’s body after the autopsy.

“Amandeep called me on Monday afternoon. But I could not answer her call. Later in evening I got a call saying that my daughter had been killed,” said an inconsolable Kulbir.

He said Amandeep was his ‘son’, who was not only good at studies, but also very obedient. He shared that it was only Amandeep in his whole extended family, who had attained a master’s degree. Having completed her masters in computer application (MCA) from Dev Samaj College, Ferozepur, Amandeep, along with her four friends, had come to SAS Nagar to pursue a diploma course from a private institute in Sector 45, Chandigarh.

“My daughter was brilliant. She wanted to pursue a job after completing her diploma in Chandigarh. Had I known what fate had in store for her, my wife and I would have never allowed her to go to Chandigarh. She would have turned 22 on February 22,” said Kulbir.

“We were against her decision of coming to Chandigarh. But she assured us that she would never let us down. She told her mother that she had studied well all along, and now wanted to do something big. It was my wife and parents of Amandeep’s friends who persuaded me to send her off. Had I listened to my heart and not sent her, things would have been different. I curse the day I gave in to her demand,” Kulbir rued.

Narwail Singh, father of Amandeep’s friend, who was with her at the time of the incident, said, “My daughter and Amandeep were very close. She told me that Gurmeet came out of nowhere and within minutes of talking to Amandeep shot her dead. She is yet to come out of shock that she couldn’t even grab her as she fell to the ground.”
