Creating fake Facebook profiles, and posting objectionable text and pictures on social media top the list of cyber crimes in the city committed mostly by those between 20 and 30 years.
Providing an overview of the recent trends in cyber crime in the city, inspector of cyber cell Jasbir Singh said fake Facebook profiles, and obscene posts and pictures topped the list of cybercrimes in Chandigarh.
He said investigations had revealed that the youth often committed these crimes without
comprehending their legal complications. He further said in most cases, the issue would be resolved by getting the accused to delete the fake profiles and the objectionable text and/or pictures, and by convincing the two parties to settle on a compromise.
The inspector claimed that of the 400 complaints related to cyber crimes, only 30 complaints were pending for further investigation (as on November 23).
The cyber crime cell of the city has also received complaints of misuse of credit and debit cards.
Net banking fraud had also become prevalent in the city, claimed sources. Officials in the cyber crime cell said several miscreants, pretending to be bank employees, had called the customers of many banks and had asked for the pin numbers of their debit or credit cards. After receiving the pin numbers, they accessed the accounts and withdrew money.
