It was with much fanfare that Panjab University (PU) authorities decided that no hostel accommodation will be provided to students who have four-wheelers; but there has been no step towards its implementation.
With less than a month for the new academic session to begin, the recommendation, which was given by a committee earlier this year and approved by the vice-chancellor, hasn't been listed before the PU syndicate for final approval.
It was in May that the committee gave the recommendation and it was decided that the no-car rule be in the hostel handbook of information. However, it's not even up on the website (puchd.ac.in) yet.
Dean, student welfare, (DSW) AS Ahluwalia told HT, "We are all in favour of the recommendation and will implement it from this session onwards." However, Dr Ahluwalia underlined that the implementation can't happen until the syndicate approves such recommendations. "We are still counselling students. I am sure and we will soon be implementing it."
PU authorities had taken this decision to check traffic congestion and violence.
In another move, PU had decided to put a complete ban on entry of outsiders who were involved in recent clash on July 5. The authorities are gathering information about students with criminal past who might even be banned, said sources. Before July 5, there was another clash on June 18 involving students.
