Following the issuance of arrest warrants against suspended inspector general of police (IG) Gautam Cheema, who is currently on the run, he is not left with many options. The Punjab Police will have him declared a proclaimed offender (PO) if he doesn’t surrender in the near future.
The SAS Nagar police had procured the arrest warrants of the 1995-batch Punjab-cadre IPS officer from the local court which directed the cops to produce Cheema in the court on or before September 27.
Cheema, son of a retired Punjab IAS officer, comes from a well-connected family.
The SAS Nagar police had booked Cheema on August 31 along with his accomplice Ajay Chaudhary for abducting PO Sumedh Gulati from the SAS Nagar police station.
On September 2, Cheema was again booked for molesting Kricpy Khaira, wife of Davinder Singh Gill, a conman and clerkturned-coloniser. Gill is a close associate of Gulati. Now, it has been nearly 18 days since Cheema has gone into hiding.
SAS Nagar senior superintendent of police (SSP) Inder Mohan Singh said the police were already searching for Cheema’s possible hideouts. In case Cheema was not arrested or he failed to surrender, the police would move the court to get him declared a PO, he added.
