A day after a 16-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide at Bhagwanpur village in Barwala following harassment by some youths, the police on Tuesday arrested one suspect.

"We have arrested Kalia in the case. He used to call the victim, Amarjeet Kaur, and pass obscene comments. Another suspect Rinku alias Rishi Pal, who is Kalia's cousin, is absconding," said inspector Arvind Kumar, station house officer (SHO), Chandimandir police station.

Meanwhile, the body was handed over to the family after a post-mortem examination at a Dera Bassi hospital. The autopsy confirmed that the victim died of consuming an insecticide.

The victim was a student of Government Senior Secondary School, Bhareli village. She had stood first in Class 10 following which Bhareli's sarpanch had awarded her `30,000 in cash.
The police on Monday had registered a case of abetment to suicide after Kaur's father Rajinder Singh, a farmer, had alleged that some youths used to harass his daughter over the phone. Whenever Kaur picked the calls, the youths used to pass obscene remarks, and if another family member answered the calls, they used to hang up.

The girl on Monday had told about the continuous harassment to her cousin, Ranjit Singh, who had then approached Kalia and beat him up. Kalia later called in other youths and beat up Ranjit. As per villagers, stone pelting also took place in which Kaur was injured.

After the incident, Kaur returned to her house and consumed insecticide. Her parents, who found her, took her to a Dera Bassi hospital where she was declared brought dead.
