For the past 30 years these shops have been operational in Old Panchkula, but will now face demolition as the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) on Friday gave a 24-hour notice to the owners of about 100 illegal structures.
However, later the orders were kept pending as the force was not being made available by the Panchkula police.
The HUDA authorities have sent notice to these shop owners, informing that in case they resist the demolition drive, required action will be taken against them.
According to shop owners, around 100 shops are operational in the market and the HUDA authorities are deliberately trying to demolish them. Before taking this decision, the HUDA authorities had also taken a decision to demolish illegal structures behind Sooraj theatre in Sector 1, but it has not been executed till date.
Though the shop owners tried to meet local MLA DK Bansal to apprise him about the issue, since the MLA was not available the meeting could not be held. The shop owners also protested outside the MLA office.
Later, the MLA came out in support of these shop owners and said he would take up the issue with the HUDA authorities and see to it that such a demolition drive was not carried out.
