People's Party Of Punjab

People's Party of Punjab (PPP) president Manpreet Singh Badal on Friday callened upon opposition parties to contest the forthcoming municipal council elections jointly to defeat the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance.

Talking to mediapersons here, Manpreet claimed that local level adjustments made by opposition parties in the recently held zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections in the state had yielded good results. "If a formal alliance or similar seat adjustment are made in the municipal council elections, it would yield good results," he said.

He said the PPP would contest the municipal council elections and a mass contact programme had been launched.

On a question about an alliance with the Congress in the Lok Sabha elections, Manpreet said it was too early to comment on the likelihood.

He said he was satisfied with the performance of the party in the elections to panchayati raj institutions and claimed that more people were aligning with the party.

Manpreet said people of the state were fed up with the policies of the SAD-BJP government "The state is in a financial crisis. Health and education sectors have crippled, while unemployment and lawlessness are on the rise."

On the occasion, BSP leader Jaspal Singh Gaddu announced to join the PPP.

Welcoming Gaddu, Badal said he would be given due respect in the PPP. Gaddu was appointed as secretary-general of the Rupnagar district unit of PPP.

Earlier, he also addressed a party rally at Tedhewal village in Nurpur Bedi.
