Highlight Story

Only destiny can do this — two people with different attitudes and different statuses come together for a lifetime — this is the story of Shakeen Singh, 51, an eye surgeon, and Sandeep Kaur, 46, a dentist — happily married now for 25 years, parents to two children and running a hospital together — who believe that “everything happened for a reason.”

While studying at the Government Dental College in Amritsar in the early ’90s, Sandeep was a complete tomboy and Shakeen, who was studying at the Government Medical College in the same city, was a shy, happy-go-lucky boy. When Shakeen first proposed to Sandeep, she refused. “She rejected my proposal. Later, when I was in Patiala for further studies, a friend mentioned her as the ‘best match’ for me, and I understood that there are some ‘higher powers’ that want us to meet,” laughs Shakeen.

Meanwhile, Sandeep, who shared a warm bond with her seniors, was also suggested the name of Shakeen as ‘the best match’ for her. “For girls, an easy way to escape marriage is by saying that the boy ‘is not our type’. And, I actually never liked him so I refused,” said she.

Sandeep, who claims to have “no interest in marriage, being focussed on career,” decided to hold marriage plans for the moment. But, destiny had other plans. Shakeen pitches in, “When I went to Patiala after feeling dejected, one of my friends again talked to me about a girl who is sweet, decent, nice and well-educated girl, and above all, from the medical field. I was curious.” Sandeep laughs and completes his sentence, “And, it was again me!”

That day, Shakeen felt that something was planned for them. “He proposed me for marriage. I asked him to ask my family for my hand. And like a true gentleman, he did and said to my mother: ‘I like your daughter and want to marry her.’ My mother was so pleased with Shakeen that she agreed right away,” smiles Sandeep, with Shakeen adding with a grin that his mother-in-law is in fact more fond of him than his wife. “I guess every girl wants a husband whom her family likes and who respects and loves her family as well,” says Sandeep.

* The lady is especially impressed him not accepting dowry. “I got a wonderful family who accepted me without any demands. I came to this house with only my clothes,” she tells us with pride, adding, “He is my best friend, the best husband and indeed, the best father.”
