As many as 212 officials were found absent during the surprise check conducted by deputy commissioners (DC) in all sub-divisional public offices on Monday, on the direction of the Punjab chief secretary (CS).
Show cause notices are being issued to the absentees by the respective DCs.
An official spokesperson said that the checking was a part of the ongoing campaign initiated by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to ensure punctuality in government offices in order to serve the citizens efficiently.
He said more inspections would be conducted in future and that irregularity and absenteeism would not be tolerated.
Appropriate action will be initiated against erring officials, he said.
As many as 52 officials were found absent in Jalandhar district's tehsil offices.
In Fazilka, 28 officials were found absent. This included district revenue officer, Abohar naib tehsildar and other officials of the district administrative complex and Abohar tehsil.
In Amritsar, 26 officials were found absent.
Other districts also presented a similar picture during checking.
Taking a serious note of the absenteeism, the CS asked financial commissioner revenue to take strict action against the erring officials.
In a checking done at the office of the director of agriculture and Punjab Seed Corporation, Chandigarh, 85 officials were found absent. It included agriculture director Mangal Singh and five joint directors - Nirankar Singh, Kawaljit Singh, Dev Raj Kalia, Sarabjit Singh and Rajneesh Chander Mehta.
