The mobile wing of the excise and taxation department, Punjab, seized 350 smartphones of companies, including Apple, Samsung and Karbon along with 1,300 memory cards near Balongi barrier in Kharar on Friday.
The mobile phones worth Rs 30 lakh were being transported without bills in a Toyata Innova car bearing Ludhiana's registration number (PB-10-1455).
Excise and taxation officer, Abhishek Duggal said: "We received a tip off that an SUV bearing Ludhiana number is bringing mobile phones from Chandigarh to Ludhiana. We laid a trap at Balongi barrier and after checking found nearly 350 smartphones of different companies. When we asked the car occupants to produce the bills they failed to do so."
Duggal further added that one of the occupants, Ramandeep Singh Rompy, who is an employee of Kalra Electronics in Ludhiana, where the consignment was to reach, revealed that, the mobile phones were brought from Delhi and they shifted in their car at Sector 22, Chandigarh. From there they were to be transported to Kalra Electronics in Ludhiana. "We will impose a fine of nearly Rs 25lakh under Section 51 of 6b under Punjab Value Added Tax (VAT)," Duggal added.
