22-year-old Australian tourist

A 22-year-old Australian tourist has accused a Chandigarh resident, Sami Sardana, of raping her at Kasol village, 40km from Kullu town. The foreigner, who hails from Victoria (Australia), had befriended Sardana through a social networking site.

She told the police that she met Sardana at a festival in Kasol on May 12. The tourist said she had a severe headache after the festival and asked Sardana for medication. As per her claim, she fell unconscious after ingesting the medicine given by him. The Australian national told the police that when she regained consciousness, she found herself naked in a hotel room at Kasol. She alleged that Sardana sexually abused her.

The tourist, who was staying in Kasol with her friends, then went to Kullu to register a police complaint. The woman was taken to a hospital, where doctors confirmed sexual assault.

“She came to the Kullu police station on May 13. We have registered a case and are investigating the matter,” additional superintendent of police Sandeep Dhawal told Hindustan Times.

The police have constituted teams to trace Sardana, who reportedly left for Tosh, another village in the Manikaran valley, after the incident. The tourist told the police that the accused hailed from Chandigarh, but she did not know his address.
